Linda Constanzo Cahir argues that adaption can be read as a process of translation, which is very pertinent to this film in particular.

Louis's perspectives were always chilling to the bone, because he thought such horrible thoughts for a child. Upon learning this was being adapted into a film, my interest was even further piqued. I honestly don't know what to think of this book. This story is a combination of science fiction and psychological thriller. In some ways it could be considered a whodunit, because Louis lies in a coma from its opening pages, and the reader desperately wants to know exactly dtax he got there.

Louis miraculously survives—but the family has been shattered. In short, there were a lot of surprising plot twists that later on made me howl in disbelief and shock alone in my room, of course as I flipped through the pages eagerly.
